Upgrading is a good start. 50% water changes every day for the next while is a good follow up.

Even with the undergravel filter and that sponge filter, I still would suggest getting a 'hang on the back' style filter, or even better, a cannister filter.

If you're changing 50% of the water every day with a good dechlorinator, and getting him to a bigger home, you're doing as much as you can do for this fishy. I hope he gets better soon for you.

I just feel like I need to add that your fish has been living in less-than-ideal conditions for a long time now, so he might be hurt in a way that even the best of care can't fix.

How are your other two Oscars in the 110 gallon tank doing? Hopefully they are also getting weekly water changes with dechlorinator now?

Oh, and as for how often you need to rinse your filter media - when the water flow through them slows down. For some this is every week, for others, once a year. I rinse mine every ten days or so just because.

But much more important is a regular, weekly water change of 50%, with a good dechlorinator - once everything is normal. While you have a sick fish, lots of water changes are the way to go.

exactly. oscars are a little aggressive by nature... it depends on how bad the aggression is. something should only been done if one of them is really getting a beat down. gill flaring and all that is perfectly normal. as long as they are not taking bites out of each other then your ok. they may fight a little but hopefully they can both hold their own.

you can try to take them out of the tank and put them in a bucket or something... then rearrange the tank so that when they are introduced back into the tank they feel as if they have been put into a different tank.

sounds as if they are feeling better now that youve done some work to the tank so thats defiantly a plus.

Well done on deciding to send the third one back to the petshop. I know it's very sad, but I agree that it's the right choice.

MetalHead said it, exactly. Once a week, half your water, with a good dechlorinator. Your filters can really just sit there until the water flow slows down.

And yes, they will argue. Some Oscars won't live happily together ever, some will establish a hierarchy and then a small amount of agression will always be there, but it shouldn't be a problem. Keep your eye on it - if there is serious damage you might need to divide the tank.

Hi MetalHead88 / Nina,

The one that is aggressive is the smaller black one he just comes over and keeps biting or nibbles (don't know) the white on the body just behind the gills. I might have to rearrange the tank i thing that would be better coz i cant loose another one for sure..........
I am actually upset that all this started after the water change :(.....I wish i had logged into this site before the water change.............

With the aggression, in the past I've used the bucket technique before, and most recently with my newest Arowana.

Simply remove the aggressor, in my case my smaller arowana was going after the larger new addition. Now wrangling these fish is no small feat, and my bucket, is more of a small tub with a lid.

After being together for about 2 days, I observed my smaller Aro harassing my new one. I decided after much thought, to remove the smaller Aro and put him in the tub for 30 minutes. This serves two purposes. It allows the new guy some time to relax without being harassed constantly, and when putting the smaller one back in the tank he perceived this as a new tank and was much less aggressive.

Hope you can get it worked out.
