I have heard that you need 5-10x volume per hour filtered. Until someone more knowledgeable answers, id google/amazon that rate and start reading reviews in your price range.

i have a 55G marineland LED tank for my 1 red oscar who is about 8 inches right now.
i ALSO have 2 penguin 350's and although they do work well i dont like that i have to turn off the filters whenever i do a water change to get more than 25% out haha. which im sure you probubly have to do this as well.
i like to keep to the same brand of things to make it simple, so i will find the canister filter i will be getting, and post a link for you.
although i am in canada, and this is a canadian website, i dont think they can mail to you, but you might be able to find it where you are.

www.bigalsonline.ca/fish/filters/multi-s...er-filter-c-360.html

i hope this helps you out. i only have 2 tanks. the 55G outside my bedroom, and my fiance's 10 gallon with her jelly bean cichlids (2)
so we are basicaly on the same wavelength on tanks at the moment.

10x water volume if you only have 1 HOB. So if you have multiple multiple HOBs make sure that the total of water filtered is 550gph.

5x water volume if you only have 1 canister. So if you have multiple canisters make sure that the total of water filtered is 275gph.

So the two penguins combined are adequate since you are filtering at 700 gph.

If you want to get a canister then do so. Look for one that will handle up to 55g tank.

so the 1 canister alone for a 55G max would do just fine for a oscar in a 55g?
even though they have a huge bio-load?
im glad to hear that opinion haha i have always heard that the 2 penguins isnt enough and that i need more. (which i always faught tooth and nail because i have 0 nitrite and ammonia.)
so i might hold off on the canister... for now at least. haha

If you load the canister with sponges and biomedia, then yes a single canister will be fine for a 55g. The key is that ammonia and nitrites stay at 0.

With that being said, adding a canister will help prevent a catastrophic situation if one of your penguins just stop. So you can wait a bit until you decide what type of canister to get and have the funds.
