Hello, group. Got my O yesterday after my cycle was right, finally! I understood getting an O would limit my options in fish, live plants, and even decorations.. but now I know I made the right decision. I knew I would appreciate his/her intelligence, aesthetic, and predatory instincts!! He's only about 3 inches rn. I fed him frozen cubed brine shrimp for his first meal, good lawd those cubes are messy. Love his pattern, inquisitive eyes, and long a** pectoral fins (wondering if he'll grow into those lol). Thank you guys for providing a wealth of knowledge to a complete noob like me haha. Heres a pic, his name is Sushi btw!

Welcome to OFL and congrats on the wee Oscar. If I may make a quick suggestion, get him into quality pellets asap, add some high protein treats. Frozen food as I know it is mostly moisture, little nutrition, and as you noticed, messy, lol.

Thanks for the tip. Do you like floating or sinking? Can you suggest a reputable brand?

Floating or sinking really doesn't matter to Oscar, they are generally pigs that get it all anyways. I prefer floating, as its easier to remove should the fish suddenly turn off his food. That's common btw. I use Northfin, not exclusively, but its Canadian made, I am Canadian and its very easy for me to get. NewLifeSpectrum, Omega1, Hikari, Southern Delight, Paradigm, Dainichi are all good. I like freeze dried krill and shrimp as treats. A veg based pellet should be a good part of Oscars diet. I use kelp wafers. Generally designed for plecos and bottom feeders, but good for all omnivore cichlids. Try some fruit pieces. Orange, banana, mango. VitaminC is also a very important thing for Oscar to get into himself. Never use aquatic feeders like minnows or goldfish. Earthworms, mealworms and crickets are safe, nourishing live foods. A varied diet is best, and at 3ins and always hungry, your guy should eat damn near everything. Caution to NOT overfeed.
