BegineerOscar created the topic: Filtration Media Arrangement

I use Sun Sun Canister filter 304B which I would like to do some upgrades,

Planning to arrange the media in the below manner.

Bottom tray: Mechanical

Next tray : Purigen 100ml with mesh bag.

Next tray: Biological (getting Matrix here)

Top tray: Biological

please advise is this the correct way to do or any modification?

What size of tank is this filter on? Any other filter with it? Kind, size and number of fish in the tank? The Purigen needs recharging when it turns brown. You need to open the can to inspect it. Why do you think you need Purigen? You have the right idea with media. Matrix is high quality bio media. If your tap has minimal to no nitrate, skip the Purigen, use as much Matrix as each tray will hold. Mechanical on the bottom is correct.

Q: What size of tank is this filter on?
A: Its 72 Gallon tank,

Q: Any other filter with it?
A: No

Q: Kind, size and number of fish in the tank?
A: only one Oscar (2 years old or more than 8 inch in size)

Q: Why do you think you need Purigen?
A: Highest organic removal capacity - Helps to make the water crystal clear.

I prefer Purigen because its rechargeable and I am cleaning my canister every couple of months. Just rinsing the sponges.

Just remember that clear water doesn't necessarily mean clean water. You may be stretching the limits of a single small canister on 70 g with a decent sized Oscar. If you are satisfied with the system as is and fish is healthy, all may be good. If I had your exact setup I would add an Aquaclear 110 filter to the tank. Good mechanical assistance, decent biological help, good backup should the canister suddenly fail. Another tip... no filtration of any kind or capacity is a substitute for regular large volume water changes. That's the real highest organic removal capacity. Again, if I had your setup I would be doing 75% water changes every 4-5 days. That's what I currently do with my tanks that are far bigger with much more filtration.
