HappyHands created the topic: Questions regarding popeye due to septicaemia.

I took in an extremely sick juvenile Oscar. He has HITH and suspected septicemia as there was blood streaking in fins and behind gills. He also has one eye due to supposed birth defect. I have ordered kanaplax and have been treating with furan 2 until it comes in. Over the past few days all the signs for septicemia have improved greatly until this am. I got up and there is now a blood tinged fluid sack putting pressure on his eye causing popeye. My question is would it be wise to drain the fluid sack to reduce pressure or is it best to leave alone. I haven't found any info on the benefit's of draining if any. Thank you all in advance!

Hello and welcome. Good of you to try to save the fish. Sounds as if he has been thru the wringer. I myself have not heard of draining a fluid sack. What is the Ph in your tank? Cycled system with established filtration? Furan is for Ph over 7.5, Kanamyacin based med is for under 7.5. Pristine, toxin free water is a must at any rate.

Yes was really neglected in a small tank that wasn't getting water changes. I'm not sure on pH. He is in a 20 long qt tank now that was fully cycled I also pulled a aqua clear 70 off of my main cichlid tank to give more water flow. The kenaplax will be her Wednesday at the latest. Furan was all I could find in a 40 mile range other than pimafix and melafix. I also ha e aquarium salt but haven't used it. Water parameter are 0 ammonia 0 nitrites an 10 nitrates. He/she really seemed to be improving and was eating and swimming again then the eye problem occurred.

Popeye/cloudy eye is very treatable. making progress is very good. Tough little bugger huh? I would salt the water but use pure Epsom salt instead. Wont take long for him to foul 20g, I would be doing daily water changes of at least 15gals. I would go to Monsterfishkeepers site, search popeye. You will find effective treatments there

Thank you for the response's! I was doing close to 90% water changes but have been following the directions on the furan. Yes he seems pretty tough. In 10 years of keeping cichlids I haven't seen one worse off and still be alive! I will check monster fish keepers. Thank you again!
